The human mind - and especially ours in the west - tends to define things. There is for instance 'good' and there is 'bad'. It is also true for less abstract things. Objects have a border, a contour. We don't look at one picture, but a lot of objects: we see a tree, a house, a dog. A person we look at, is separate from it's surroundings.
